Chemical Peel Season!

Writer: Robin ButwanRobin Butwan

Fall is the perfect time for a chemical peel! Why? Mostly because we spend the majority of our time inside, so while your skin is healing, you are less likely to get sun damage. Healing? Will a chemical peel leave me looking like a lizard? At Face Grace, I believe chemical peels should not cause damage to the living dermis layer of the skin. My peels are gentle, yet highly effective and achieve great results with acne scars, melasma, and sun spots. Every peel is fully customized to treat your specific skin type and concern. A chemical peel is a great way to rejuvenate and refresh your skin. It can treat common skin problems and decrease the appearance of age. But when is your skin ready for a peel? The answer depends on your skin and whether you’re experiencing one of four common signs that signal it’s time.

#1: Fine Lines and Wrinkles

The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is the perfect time to schedule a chemical peel. Did you know they don’t appear only after becoming a grandparent? Visible fine lines and worrisome wrinkles can start to show as early as your 30s, and they can make you look dramatically older.

A peel can stimulate skin regeneration. It helps shed dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

#2: Acne and Acne Scarring

Acne isn’t a skin condition limited to teenagers. Everyone can experience mild to severe breakouts anywhere on their body at any age. Reoccurring or chronic breakouts can signal the need to schedule a chemical peel to treat acne. A peel can reduce the appearance, severity, and reoccurrence of breakouts.

For some, acne breakouts cause mild to severe scarring. A peel can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, and the simultaneous reduction or postponement of fine lines and wrinkles is a bonus.

#3: Skin Pigmentation Concerns

A pigment called melanin determines the color of your skin. As you age, the special cells in the skin that make melanin can become damaged or unhealthy. Melanin production is impacted, and skin pigmentation disorders that affect patches of skin can result.

A chemical peel that targets the area of discoloration can reduce the appearance of odd skin pigmentation. It can even decrease the appearance of freckles.

#4: Skin Texture Concerns

As we age, the texture of our skin changes. It’s common for your skin to lose moisture upon entering your 30s. As a result, skin texture can become dry and leathery. Skin damage can also impact texture, making delicate skin feel and look weathered.

A chemical peel is a possible means of countering unwanted and uncomfortable skin texture changes. I can help you determine if your skin texture concerns mean it’s time to schedule a peel.

When to Delay a Chemical Peel

Just as there are signs to schedule a peel, there are also signs to delay one. In order to achieve the safest results, a peel should only be administered by an experienced esthetician. Eight major conditions can delay a peel:

  1. Active cold sores

  2. Open lesions

  3. Pregnancy

  4. Lactation

  5. Untreated diabetes

  6. Any burn (sun or otherwise)

  7. Use of the prescription Accutane within the last 6 months

  8. Any recent facial surgery

If you’re scheduling a chemical peel or have one coming up, notify your esthetician immediately if you have any of these eight conditions. They will work with you to ensure your skin gets the right care at the right time so you can benefit from the greatest results possible.

Everyone can benefit from a chemical peel. Remember, it’s easier to prevent damage than to repair it, so you don’t need to wait until wrinkles, pigment concerns, or uneven texture appear.
